Women in Tech Fights the Gender Divide with Impact Hub Manila

The entrepreneurial industry in the Philippines has been advancing rapidly in the last few years. Still, gender divide. Even in this part of the economy, the divide is still noticeable, especially in tech. As rapid as the Philippine economy develops, the adaptation of tech grows more evidently. Everybody has the potential to make their mark in digital history. More and more women in tech are rising above the old-age expectations of society by showcasing their skills. Yet, because of the present misconceptions regarding gender mentality issues, women aren’t given sufficient opportunities to do so.

Rounding up Women in Tech for eSkills4Girls

With the help of the #eskills4girls challenge, which was launched on March 28 & 29, 2017 powered by Impact Hub and BMZ, women are now being given the chance to participate in the digital economy. The participation of women in tech aims to make a change for the betterment of every other woman in different industries.

During the challenge here in the Philippines, 2 tech teams led by women – Aurelia & Amelia and Jeepneed – were chosen to represent eSkills4Girls Manila in Berlin. Aurelia & Amelia is the first accessory retailer to offer multi-style and multi-purpose fashion accessories. The brand supports local Filipino suppliers and non-profit organizations. On the other hand, Jeepneed, who brought hands-on science to schools by providing affordable materials, mapped to local Department of Education standards in the Hackathon during the Women20 Summit. In the end, Jeepneed was able to win 15,000 euros and mentorship from Google at second place.

By supporting challenges with advocacies like these, we may all be able to see more progress in opening opportunities where women in tech can practice and apply their digital skills. The goal here is to give equal opportunities in tech, no matter the gender and the race.

Impact Hub co-founder LizAn Kuster says, “I believe that future generations will grow up in a gender equal world. To get there, we need to continuously support and empower women today.” Let us all help each other in getting through the goals for tomorrow’s better women and eradicate gender divide.
