Imagine multiple cities across the nation, aiming to brainstorm solutions and create innovations that will help solve the world’s most pressing concerns. Now put digital transformation into the equation and you have yourself what today’s generation refers to as a “hackathon”. In the Philippines, Impact Hub Manila attempts to stage the biggest hackathon the country has ever seen.
Impact Hackathon is the network’s official attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest multi-city hackathon. The event happens on October 30, 2019, in Metro Manila, to jumpstart the Philippine Startup Week celebrations slated the following month. An estimated 3,500 developers, designers, and entrepreneurs are expected to participate in the regional assembly in Manila, while over 10,000 participants from various cities across the nation and the Asia-Pacific are expected to join the 24-hour reverse hackathon competition. The event also serves as one of the major highlights in this year’s Impact Hub Manila’s Impact2050, an integrated and innovative multi-year entrepreneurial programme designed to lead the impact entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Asia Pacific towards sustainable development.
Leading personalities for Impact Hackathon’s Jury Board will include Genuisto International Ltd. Founders Shane Hermans and Matthew Koling; ClinkIT CEO Paul Harris; and Grocercoin CEO Jayjay Viray among others.
Attendees will be presented with a myriad of opportunities to cultivate new skills, meet like-minded professionals, interact with other companies, and have fun while working on actual business challenges during the hackathon. The monumental event has likewise partnered with some of the biggest enterprises, NGOs. government agencies, and social entrepreneurs in the country today including PLDT, UnionBank, Smart, Microsoft, Spark Up, Business World, Asian Development Bank, League of Cities of the Philippines, DOST, DTI, DICT, and Gawad Kalinga among others.
Through the years, Impact Hub Manila has positioned itself as the country’s main network of synergized entrepreneurial communities that work together and inspire each other to create positive changes in society. To date, the network has made monumental impacts at scale on health, education, climate change, and food and agriculture.
With the stage set for what is to become another significant gathering of today’s prime movers in both business, government, and social citizenship, Impact Hackathon is anticipated to draw out a wellspring of fresh solutions for many of the country’s social challenges, all of which are aligned to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Attendees also stand the chance to earn support grants, collaborations with multinational brands and partners, as well as cash prizes amounting to ₱10 million to be awarded to winners of Impact Hackathon.
Today, any enterprise or individual has the capacity to make a difference in society. All it really takes is the initiative to foster a community that shares mutual goals for the benefit of all. Impact Hub Manila has proven this model time and again and with the upcoming Impact Hackathon, more bright ideas will emerge at the forefront and will all lead us a step further towards a better change.
