On Wednesday, October 4th, A diverse crowd of entrepreneurs, students, and social entrepreneurs gathered at Impact Hub Manila’s coworking space at V Corporate Center in Makati for “Impact Meets Innovation”, a joint event between Impact Hub Manila and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Philippines.

They came for a conversation around the question; “How do we use innovation to achieve maximum impact?”, a conversation focused on fostering the growth of impact and innovation within both the Philippines’ startup community and other ASEAN Member States, in order to have a greater collective impact to the world.

After opening remarks by Impact Hub Manila Founder and CEO, Ces Rondario, Agnes Legaspi of DTI took the floor to give a brief overview of the state of the entrepreneurship community in the Philippines, and how the growth of impact-based industry in the Philippines can make not only a local but a global impact.

Local entrepreneurs and impact business veterans made up a panel that was asked to discuss best practices in “Partnering for Innovation, Engaging the World.” Freddie Tinga, President of Global Electric Transportation Ltd, shared his thoughts on the importance of tackling the most pressing problems in our society through cause-based business models. “If necessity is the mother of invention, then desperation is the father”, he stated, amidst audience laughter. Freddie’s expertise in building sustainable, environment friendly solutions to Manila’s “traffic problem” sparked many questions from audience members and encouraged a healthy dialog during his Q+A session. Lilian Lehman, Associate Director at IDinsight, spoke to the importance of measuring your impact as a business. “Determine what your goals are, large and small”, she encouraged audience members, “and create a system to record your progress on those goals”. Matthew Cua Founder & CEO of Skyeye Inc, spoke passionately about taking risks in pursuit of reaching your impact goals.

Before the event’s closing, Brian Ambulo of DTI shared information on the upcoming ASEAN Slingshot Startup and Innovation Summit, to take place October 19-20th. Anchoring the ASEAN 2017 theme: “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” the Slingshot ASEAN 2017 will be driven by the vision of a thriving innovation economy across the region.

This event is the first of two DTI+Impact Hub joint events in our “Road to Slingshot” series as we prepare for the ASEAN Slingshot Startup and Innovation Summit October 19-20th. Our second Event, a Reverse Funding Forum, will take place on October 12th, 2017. Click here to grab a FREE ticket!
