What do you get when you mix a group of innovators from around the globe, three days in Manila, and a bit too little sleep? A lot of bright ideas, friendships forged, and vibrant connections between the international delegates and the movers and shakers in the Philippines startup Space.

StartUp AsiaBerlin (SUAB)’s international “Roadshow” event is an annual startup ecosystem exploration trip masterminded by the Berlin-based group. This year, the group gathered a group of delegates from Indonesia, Germany, India, and the Philippines to travel to Manila, Jakarta, and Bangalore, partnering with local startup incubators in each location to host meetups and learning sessions.

Manila was the first Roadshow stop, and as the official Philippines host of SUAB, Impact Hub Manila organized both business events and cultural experiences over the course of the delegation’s three day stay.

Delegates began their time in the Philippines by attending ASEAN’s Slingshot conference, an event centered around startups and innovation that drew over a thousand local and international participants to engage in plenary talks, learning hubs, startup exhibitions and pitching competitions.

The second day of the Roadshow’s Manila leg took delegates on a whirlwind tour of startup incubation and acceleration spaces including Launch Garage, Kickstart, and one of Impact Hub Manila’s co-working locations in Makati. While at Impact Hub, delegates served as the special speakers in a seminar on digitization attended by business owners, investors, and students.

The third day of the event centered around Filipino culture and included excursions for the visiting delegates to the local markets, Habi textile fair, Fort Santiago, and Casa Manila, culminating in a traditional Filipino dinner and cultural dance show.

Delegates ended their time in Manila feeling excited by the possibilities offered by the Philippines’ vibrant and growing startup scene. Over the coming months, delegates will have the opportunity to follow up on the connections made during their time visiting the Philippines and other ASEAN countries, hoping to forge partnerships with the best and brightest of emerging companies and ideas from Southeast Asia.
